After producing an All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year-level campaign last season, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley entered 2026 with MVP chatter swirling. Any dip from that standard now draws immediate scrutiny, especially as the club eyes a deep postseason run.
Mobley’s latest flashpoint came in Sunday’s 116-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 6-foot-11 big man collected just two rebounds while Oklahoma City secured 13 offensive boards overall. Late-game possessions also slipped away from Cleveland, amplifying criticism of the 24-year-old.
Coaching staff notes that the Cavaliers’ switch-heavy defensive scheme often pulls Mobley away from the paint, leaving long rebounds outside his area. Still, the numbers stand out on a night when extra Thunder possessions proved costly.
On offense, Cleveland has shuffled Mobley’s responsibilities throughout the year. Early in the season he handled the ball more frequently, initiating sets on the perimeter. Later, he was stationed closer to the rim, finding rhythm before a pair of calf injuries interrupted his progress.
The picture shifted again once James Harden arrived, effectively moving Mobley toward a third-option scoring role. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff continues to search for the balance between Harden’s playmaking, Donovan Mitchell’s shot creation and Mobley’s interior presence.
Mobley turns 25 in June and remains one of the league’s most versatile defenders, yet his challenge is adapting to ever-changing duties while outside expectations only intensify.
