James Harden’s arrival in Cleveland has reopened a familiar question: can one of the NBA’s most influential scorers finally secure a championship ring?
The 34-year-old guard, acquired by the Cavaliers earlier this season, has already stamped his style on the team’s offense. Cleveland (34-21) is spacing the floor more effectively, Jarrett Allen is getting easier looks at the rim, and All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell says he now has “more room to be myself.”
Harden’s impact on the modern game is undisputed. The high-usage, three-point-heavy blueprint he popularized is visible today in stars such as Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jayson Tatum. What remains absent from his résumé is a title—an omission that continues to shape public debate over his legacy.
Mitchell acknowledged the stakes inside the locker room. “The first thing we talked about was, like, man, this could be his last chance to try and get a ring,” he said. “And we’re all in the locker room with the same mindset.”
Harden’s methods have long polarized fans—his step-back jumper, whistle-drawing drives and willingness to push rule boundaries have been criticized as emblematic of the league’s shift toward efficiency above aesthetics. Mitchell, however, rejects the idea that championships are the only valid metric. “This whole ring culture thing is crazy,” he noted. “That’s the way we value people.”
