The Los Angeles Lakers have begun pinpointing two-way wings for the upcoming free-agency period, and Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins tops an internal list that also features Tari Eason and Peyton Watson, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Los Angeles made only one move at the recent trade deadline—acquiring guard Luke Kennard—leaving intact a roster that ranks near the bottom of the league defensively and has struggled against younger, more athletic opponents. Despite career-best production from Luka Doncic and All-Star-level seasons from LeBron James and Austin Reaves, the Lakers remain a tier below the NBA’s elite contenders.
Front-office officials expect to have additional first-round draft capital and salary-cap flexibility this summer, positioning the club to be more aggressive once free agency opens.
Wiggins Leads Unrestricted Targets
Per McMenamin, the Lakers have discussed pursuing Wiggins should he decline his $30.2 million player option for 2026-27 with Miami. The former No. 1 overall pick is valued for his perimeter defense, reliable three-point shooting and championship experience.
Other unrestricted wings who fit the Lakers’ 3-and-D criteria include Tobias Harris, Quentin Grimes and Dean Wade, the report added.
Restricted Options: Eason and Watson
Los Angeles has also privately weighed offer-sheet scenarios for restricted free agents Tari Eason and Peyton Watson. Denver could struggle to match a competitive bid for Watson, who is from Southern California, with $215 million already committed to guaranteed salaries for next season.
Younger players such as Eason, 23, and Watson, 22, would better align with Doncic’s timeline and help address the team’s athleticism deficit.
Eye on Possible Giannis Sweepstakes
The Lakers believe they would be on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s shortlist if the Milwaukee Bucks superstar formally requests a trade, league sources told ESPN. Bolstered by additional draft assets, Los Angeles projects it could enter talks for nearly any marquee player who becomes available.
The Lakers’ offseason strategy is expected to center on surrounding Doncic with versatile, defensive-minded wings while maintaining the flexibility to chase a transformational star should the opportunity arise.
