Of the 67 players on standard NBA deals who changed teams during this season’s trade-deadline week, 17 can sign new contracts with their current clubs right away.

Each of those 17 veterans is on track to reach free agency this summer because their agreements are expiring or include player or team options that could be declined. By signing an extension, however, any of them could take free agency off the table—provided the acquiring franchise is willing to negotiate.

League rules impose special limits on an extension when a player is moved. For the six months following a trade:

  • The combined length of the existing contract and the extension cannot exceed four total seasons, including 2025-26.
  • The first season of the extension is capped at 120 percent of the player’s current salary, or at 120 percent of the NBA’s estimated average salary if the player earns less than that figure.
  • Annual raises are limited to 5 percent after the first year of the extension.

While those restrictions could complicate negotiations for a few of the 17 players, they are not expected to be a significant hurdle for most of the group. Teams and agents now have the coming weeks and months to determine whether locking in a new deal is preferable to testing the open market once the 2026-27 league year begins.
