GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Bill Donovan, a standout guard at Boston College and the father of Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan, died Saturday. He was 85.

The death was announced in an obituary from Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville, Florida. No cause was given.

A native of Queens, New York, Donovan captained the Boston College basketball team and graduated in 1962 ranked third on the school’s career scoring list. His on-court accomplishments later earned him a place in the Boston College Hall of Fame.

After college, Donovan served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan, and the couple remained together for 63 years. They raised three children, including Billy Donovan, who starred at Providence’s 1987 Final Four run and later guided the University of Florida to 14 NCAA tournament appearances and consecutive national titles in 2006 and 2007.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately released.
