Toronto Raptors general manager Bobby Webster discussed the club’s 2025/26 campaign, forward Scottie Barnes’ development and the organization’s approach to potential trades in an interview with Eric Koreen of The Athletic conducted just before the All-Star break.
Season overview
Webster said he oscillates between believing the Raptors “haven’t accomplished anything” and allowing the organization to “enjoy some of the moments along the way.” He pointed to Barnes and Brandon Ingram being selected as All-Stars, head coach Darko Rajaković leading the World Team, and rookies Collin Murray-Boyles and Alijah Martin appearing in the Rising Stars event as highlights worth celebrating before refocusing on the stretch run.
Barnes’ continued improvement
The GM credited Barnes’ heightened “seriousness level on a consistent basis” for influencing wins. Webster noted that the 24-year-old forward, drafted in 2021, is still three to four years from what he considers an NBA player’s prime and will keep progressing as the game “slows down” for him. Webster added that it is the front office’s responsibility to surround Barnes with complementary talent.
Trade considerations
Addressing the possibility of a significant win-now move, Webster said the Eastern Conference landscape and the NBA’s recent parity—seven different champions in seven seasons—factor into any decision. He emphasized avoiding overpayment and revealed that Toronto has intentionally preserved its draft assets. When the time comes to “push them in,” Webster said the Raptors must be sure about the targeted player’s fit, career stage and skill set.
