NEW YORK — Veteran point guard Chris Paul announced his retirement from professional basketball on Friday, ending a 21-season NBA career that began in 2005.

The 39-year-old guard confirmed the decision in an Instagram post hours after the Toronto Raptors waived him. “This is it! After over 21 years I’m stepping away from basketball,” Paul wrote, adding that the sport “will forever be ingrained in the DNA of my life.”

Selected fourth overall out of Wake Forest in the 2005 NBA Draft, Paul logged 1,370 regular-season games and 149 postseason appearances across seven franchises. His résumé includes 12 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA honors, nine All-Defensive team nods—seven on the first team—five assist titles and six steals crowns. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2006 and was later voted to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

Although Paul never captured an NBA championship, he is widely credited with redefining point-guard play through his command, precision and competitiveness.
