Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was sent to the G League on Monday to take part in portions of the Maine Celtics’ practice, the NBA club announced. The All-Star is scheduled to be recalled to the parent team immediately after the workout.
The brief assignment marks another step in Tatum’s recovery from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in May during Boston’s second-round playoff loss to New York. In recent weeks he has engaged in controlled 5-on-5 sessions with team coaches.
Rookie first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez and second-rounder Amari Williams also joined the Maine practice on Monday.
Tatum, 27, earned his fourth consecutive First Team All-NBA nod in 2024-25 and placed fourth in MVP voting. He averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting .452/.343/.814 over 72 games at 36.4 minutes per contest.
President of basketball operations Brad Stevens told reporters Friday that Tatum “has hit a lot of the thresholds” in his rehab but still has “a ways to go.” Stevens added that the forward will not return to game action until fully cleared by medical staff and team officials.
At the end of last month, Tatum said he remained unsure whether he would play this season.
