Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said he and team governor Jeanie Buss will oversee forthcoming organizational changes, with newly installed majority owner Mark Walter supporting the effort.
The announcement comes after Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, completed his purchase of the NBA franchise during the current season. Because the transaction closed mid-year, major adjustments have been delayed until the offseason.
Dodgers Model Expected to Influence Lakers
Pelinka noted that one priority is to replicate elements of the Dodgers’ successful talent-development system, including their draft strategy and robust front-office structure. He emphasized that the initiative will be “led by myself and Jeanie, and with Mark’s support.”
Buss remains committed to her role as governor for at least five more years, and she and Pelinka have worked closely for several seasons. Their partnership is set to continue as Walter’s influence is integrated into basketball operations.
The Lakers have already begun consulting with Dodgers executives, including president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, as they plan to expand their own front-office staff once the season ends. While NBA rules differ from Major League Baseball guidelines, team officials believe certain operational principles can translate across sports.
The overarching objective, according to Pelinka, is to return the Lakers to championship contention under a leadership structure that blends Buss’s stewardship, Pelinka’s day-to-day management, and Walter’s organizational philosophy.
