Anthony Davis is not expected to suit up again this season for the Washington Wizards, according to multiple reports.

The Athletic, citing a league source, reported that the 31-year-old forward is unlikely to play in 2025-26, while the team is preparing a formal update in the coming days. Asked about the situation, head coach Brian Keefe told reporters he “can’t confirm that.”

League executives nevertheless believe the former Mavericks big man will stay on the sideline as he continues to recover from groin and hand injuries, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported. Davis tore ligaments in his left hand earlier in the year, an injury that initially was expected to keep him out most of February, and his recent medical history also includes adductor, eye, calf and groin problems.

In his 20 appearances for Washington, Davis averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and slightly more than 31 minutes per game.

The Wizards have little reason to expedite his return. The front office is focused on preserving a top-eight-protected 2026 first-round pick and maximizing lottery odds. Trae Young, acquired last month, has yet to debut and will remain out through the All-Star break, although the club says he is not being shut down.

Speaking to The Athletic’s David Aldridge, Davis said his meeting with team ownership “was great” but acknowledged uncertainty about his future. “At this point in my career, I want to compete for a championship,” he said. “Whether that’s here or elsewhere, I have no idea.” He added that he is open to staying in Washington but wants “the proper plan” in place.
