CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers on August 26 announced Eli Kell-Abrams as the new head coach of the Cleveland Charge, the organization’s NBA G League affiliate.
Charge general manager Liron Fanan said the team is “thrilled” to add Kell-Abrams, praising his engaging personality, extensive NBA background and sharp basketball acumen as key assets for the upcoming season.
Kell-Abrams spent the past two years with the Portland Trail Blazers as head video coordinator, working on player development, game plans and opponent scouting while providing in-game support from the back of the bench. Before his stint in Portland, he held staff roles with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat.
He succeeds Chris Darnell, who guided the Charge last season before joining Doug Christie’s coaching staff with the Sacramento Kings in the spring. Darnell became the seventh consecutive Charge head coach to leave the post for an NBA assistant position, a trend that previously included Jordi Fernandez (2014–16), now on the Brooklyn Nets’ bench.
