The Los Angeles Clippers and James Harden have been quietly discussing a possible split for several weeks, multiple league sources said, even though team officials were initially “stunned” to learn the star guard wanted out.
According to reporting from ClutchPoints and ESPN, Harden’s representatives and the Clippers are working together to identify a trade partner before Thursday’s deadline. The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently considered the frontrunner, though other clubs remain in the mix.
Cleveland’s interest is tied to a potential swap involving Darius Garland, but the Cavaliers are insisting on additional draft compensation—specifically a future first-round pick or pick swap—before moving their 24-year-old guard, sources told Sports Illustrated. Los Angeles has so far resisted that price, and Cleveland has reportedly asked about the Clippers’ 2030 first-round selection.
Rival executives believe Harden’s contract situation is driving his request. The 36-year-old owns a $42.32 million player option for 2026-27, only $13.32 million of which is guaranteed. Harden was seeking a fully guaranteed two-year, $80 million extension to stay in Los Angeles this summer, but the Clippers have offered only a one-year commitment, per ClutchPoints.
The Timberwolves have explored scenarios for Harden but had gained no significant traction as of Monday night. The Raptors and Pelicans also checked in; however, Harden is not interested in either destination, according to league insiders.
Head coach Tyronn Lue declined to delve into specifics after Monday’s loss to Philadelphia but told reporters Harden “means a lot” to the organization.
While a deal before Thursday remains possible, sources cautioned that Harden could still finish the season with the Clippers if talks stall.
