NEW YORK — With his contract set to expire this summer, LeBron James acknowledged Sunday night that his latest visit to Madison Square Garden could be his last as an NBA player.

The 41-year-old forward scored 22 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 108-96 loss to the New York Knicks and received an ovation from the crowd. After the game, he called MSG “the mecca of basketball,” noting the arena’s long list of iconic performers across sports and entertainment.

“When that time comes, I’ll miss playing here,” James said. “This place will always have a special spot in my journey.”

All-Star Streak Reaches 22

Earlier in the day, the league announced James as a Western Conference reserve, extending his record run to 22 consecutive All-Star selections. Although his production remains elite, his next contract is expected to fall well below this season’s $52.6 million salary.

External Voices on James’ Future

New York Post columnist Stefan Bondy argued that James’ 2018 decision to sign with Los Angeles limited his late-career legacy, while The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor suggested the Knicks should pursue the four-time MVP in free agency.

Doncic Trade Anniversary

Sunday also marked one year since the late-night deal that sent Luka Doncic from Dallas to Los Angeles. The 27-year-old guard posted 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists against New York and said he believes the Lakers “have a great group” capable of contending for a title.

Reaves Nearing Return

Austin Reaves missed his 19th consecutive game with a left calf strain and was ruled out shortly before tipoff. Head coach JJ Redick indicated the guard could return Tuesday in Brooklyn if he feels “100 percent confident.”
