LeBron James Says Retirement and Farewell Tour Have Not Entered His Thoughts

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said he has not considered retirement or a possible farewell tour, emphasizing that any decision about ending his career will first involve a discussion with his family.

James, now in his 23rd NBA season, addressed the topic after the Lakers’ 128-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 28, 2026, at Rocket Arena. The 41-year-old scored 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting, added five assists, and committed six turnovers in what could be his final game in his hometown.

When asked about the growing speculation that this season might be his last, James dismissed the notion that plans are already in motion.

I have not even thought to the point of a farewell tour or whatever the case may be, because I haven’t had the conversation with myself and my family on, when is it over?” he said.

Family considerations remain paramount for the four-time NBA champion. His eldest son, Bronny James, is a Lakers teammate, while younger son Bryce is a freshman at the University of Arizona and could enter the NBA as soon as next season.

Though stars such as Kobe Bryant and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were honored with league-wide farewells, James indicated he has not decided whether he would seek a similar send-off. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer and has not ruled out continuing his career, whether with the Lakers or elsewhere.

The Cavaliers are reportedly open to a third stint for the franchise’s all-time leading scorer should he choose to play beyond this season.
