Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is re-examining whether he will play at all this season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during last year’s playoffs, according to TNT insider Chris Haynes.

During a Wednesday night broadcast, Haynes said the 27-year-old All-Star had been trending toward a return but now views his comeback as “up in the air.” Tatum told Haynes he had expected to rejoin the lineup, yet “several reasons” have caused him to reconsider; the reporter did not specify what those reasons are.

In a recent appearance on the Winning Plays podcast, Tatum acknowledged Boston’s success without him and questioned how re-entering the rotation might affect team chemistry. “They have an identity this year … things that have clicked for them,” he said. “There’s a thought in my head, ‘How does that work? … 50, 60 games into a season?’”

The Celtics fell to the Hawks on Wednesday, dropping to 29-18, yet remain tied for second place in the Eastern Conference. With Tatum sidelined, Jaylen Brown has produced career-best numbers: 29.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 22.5 field-goal attempts, and 7.3 free-throw attempts per game.

Tatum admitted he worries his return might disrupt that dynamic. “Obviously, there could be some challenges,” he said. “It’s a thought like, ‘Damn, do I come back? Or should I wait?’ It’s something I contemplate every single day.”

Haynes noted Tatum could still decide to play if he feels physically and mentally ready. How the uncertainty affects Boston’s plans ahead of the trade deadline remains unclear; the club’s better-than-expected record has reportedly shifted its stance from potential seller to possible buyer.
