The Dallas Mavericks and forward P.J. Washington are expected to finalize a long-term extension approaching $90 million when the 27-year-old becomes eligible on Friday, according to Marc Stein.
The anticipated agreement would keep Washington in Dallas for the full 2025-26 season, as NBA rules would restrict any trade involving a four-year deal or one with a first-year raise exceeding 20 percent.
Front-court depth has been a talking point in Dallas since the club won the 2025 draft lottery and selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick. The roster already features Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, recently extended center Daniel Gafford, and veteran Dwight Powell, while Naji Marshall and Caleb Martin provide additional options at forward.
General manager Nico Harrison has repeatedly expressed confidence in pairing Washington with Flagg, and Stein reports that rival teams continue to admire Washington after his strong first 18 months in Dallas. During the Mavericks’ 2024 Finals run, he averaged 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds and converted late free throws that propelled Dallas past Oklahoma City in the second round.
In 2024-25, Washington started 56 of 57 games, posting 14.7 points, a career-best 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks while hitting 38.1 percent of his three-point attempts.
