The Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks have contacted free-agent shooting guard Malik Beasley, league sources told HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Both clubs are limited to offering just the veteran minimum because of salary-cap restrictions, yet each views the 28-year-old as a potential piece for a title push. Cleveland president of basketball operations Koby Altman is pursuing additional experience for a roster already viewed as a contender, while New York likewise seeks depth as one of the projected favorites in the Eastern Conference.

Beasley played all 82 games for the Detroit Pistons last season, averaging 16.3 points while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from three-point range. He finished the campaign as a finalist for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award.

Detroit had prepared a three-year offer worth about $42 million before Beasley became linked to a federal sports-gambling investigation. The guard was recently cleared, and the Pistons’ significant proposal is no longer on the table, opening the door for other bidders.

The Knicks have a prior connection: team executive Gersson Rosas signed Beasley to a four-year, $60 million contract when both were with the Minnesota Timberwolves. According to HoopsHype, several additional teams are monitoring the situation ahead of training camps, which begin in just over a month.
