ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported Friday that the Houston Rockets and 36-year-old forward Kevin Durant are likely to reach agreement on a contract extension before the new season begins, despite the absence of a deal to this point.
According to Windhorst, both sides have held talks and remain optimistic about completing an agreement. The veteran insider added that Durant may need to accept less than a full maximum salary to remain in Houston long term.
The Rockets acquired the two-time Finals MVP earlier this offseason and see him as a finishing piece rather than the focal point of their roster. Houston earned the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last year and believes Durant can elevate the club into true title contention.
Durant remains highly productive, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists over 62 games last season while shooting 43% from beyond the arc and earning his 15th All-Star selection.
Houston has already committed significant money to its young core, signing Jabari Smith Jr. to a five-year extension and bringing back Fred VanVleet on a one-plus-one deal this summer. Alperen Şengün received a five-year extension last offseason, while Tari Eason is currently eligible for a new contract and Amen Thompson will become eligible soon. Team officials are expected to monitor payroll carefully to keep the roster intact.
