Forward Jake LaRavia has become a rare bright spot for the Los Angeles Lakers, stepping into the starting lineup while Rui Hachimura recovers from injury. Over his last 10 appearances, the 24-year-old is averaging 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals, shooting 49.5% from the field and 39.6% from beyond the arc.
LaRavia’s defensive energy has been particularly valuable to a roster short on perimeter stoppers. Asked about his high-motor approach, the 6-foot-7 forward cited the significance of suiting up for the franchise he grew up supporting.
“It means something to wear ‘Lakers’ across your chest,” LaRavia said recently. “I grew up a fan, my dad grew up a fan. We understand the impact of playing for this team and what it means to the fans who come out every night. I wear the Lakers with pride across my chest every game.”
Since signing with Los Angeles during the offseason, LaRavia has worked his way into a starting unit that currently features Marcus Smart, Luka Dončić, LeBron James and Deandre Ayton. Head coach JJ Redick has also praised center Jaxson Hayes, who has closed several contests in place of Ayton, noting the importance of contributions from role players as the trade deadline approaches.
The Lakers remain last in bench scoring, heightening the need for steady production from energy players like LaRavia. While the team continues to search for consistency, the second-year forward’s two-way impact has made it increasingly difficult to envision him returning to a reserve role.
