Restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors remain without a contract agreement nearly two months after free agency opened, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported on August 22.
According to Fischer, Golden State has declined to move beyond a two-year, $45 million offer that would include a team option for the second season and would require Kuminga to waive his trade-veto rights. Kuminga and his agent, Aaron Turner, are seeking greater long-term security and have shown no interest in the proposal, viewing it as a vehicle for an in-season trade.
Fischer added that the Warriors explored sending Kuminga to the Phoenix Suns ahead of February’s trade deadline while pursuing Kevin Durant, a deal Durant ultimately rejected. Durant was later dealt from Phoenix to the Houston Rockets.
Golden State has reportedly discouraged sign-and-trade talks after previous concepts from the Sacramento Kings and Suns failed to meet the team’s valuation of the 22-year-old, the seventh overall pick in 2021.
Kuminga could accept his $7.98 million qualifying offer before the Oct. 1 deadline, a move that would grant him a no-trade clause for 2025-26 and position him for unrestricted free agency next summer. While that path would sacrifice significant short-term earnings, Fischer notes it might increase the player’s leverage and comes amid offseason interest from Sacramento, Phoenix and the Chicago Bulls.
The Warriors risk losing the athletic forward for no return if no long-term deal is reached and he enters unrestricted free agency in 2026.
