Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown publicly reprimanded Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns after New York’s loss on Jan. 15, calling one of the All-Star big man’s plays “lazy.”

Brown’s remarks came during his post-game news conference. The coach pointed to a specific sequence and said Towns’ lack of effort on the possession underlined the difference in the game. “You can’t take plays off,” Brown told reporters, adding that consistent energy is non-negotiable at the NBA level.

The criticism followed a defeat that dropped the Knicks further below .500. Towns did not immediately respond to Brown’s comments when approached in the locker room.

The two teams are not scheduled to meet again until later in the season.
