Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart says the team’s collection of seasoned players is a major reason the club has yet to lose a close game this season.

Speaking after Friday night’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Crypto.com Arena, Smart pointed to himself, LeBron James and Luka Doncic as voices that help steady the group in the final minutes. “It’s not the full story, but it definitely helps when guys like LeBron, Luka and myself have been in those situations,” the 31-year-old guard said.

The Lakers are undefeated in contests decided in the last five minutes, while all 11 of their losses have come by double-digit margins. Smart acknowledged the need to secure victories before games reach crunch time but emphasized the value of late-game composure. “A lot of times, especially down the line, games come down to crunch time. So to win those games is big,” he noted.

Defense has been a weak spot during Los Angeles’ recent slump, yet Smart believes the team’s urgency rises when the result hangs in the balance. “Do everything you can to the best of your ability and that’s all we can ask for,” he said. “Usually when the effort is there, you get a good result.”

James, now in his 22nd NBA season, has repeatedly praised Smart’s impact since the former Boston Celtics guard arrived in the offseason. Smart’s on-ball pressure and vocal leadership have drawn particular acclaim from the four-time MVP.

Los Angeles will try to translate its late-game success into more consistent performances when it visits the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 30.
