Recurring calf problems continue to sideline Chicago guard Coby White, casting doubt on both his impending free agency and the Bulls’ options before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
The 23-year-old hurt his right calf during an August workout, forcing him to miss training camp and Chicago’s first 11 games. After returning on Nov. 16 under a minutes limit, he felt tightness in his left calf within two weeks and sat out two more contests. White played in back-to-back games last Friday and Saturday, then experienced renewed tightness in his right calf during Monday’s meeting with Minnesota.
An MRI showed no new strain, and White said the imaging “actually looked better than it did in November.” He will be re-evaluated Monday. So far, the former lottery pick has appeared in 16 of the club’s 34 outings.
“It was like a warning shot,” White explained, adding that staying positive is difficult but necessary while he waits to return. Limited availability could influence his next contract and reduce any potential return if Chicago chooses to move him.
Giddey Offers Sideline Support
Starting guard Josh Giddey, out with a left hamstring strain, spent Friday’s win over Orlando coaching teammates from the bench. The Bulls improved to 2-0 without their regular backcourt. Giddey said hamstring symptoms can vanish quickly, which makes rushing back risky. “I’m just being careful, being safe,” he noted, emphasizing a desire to avoid a setback.
Tre Jones Steps Up
With White and Giddey unavailable, veteran point guard Tre Jones has taken on a larger role. Acquired from San Antonio at last season’s deadline, Jones entered the starting lineup and delivered 20 points and 12 assists in Wednesday’s victory against New Orleans. He is guaranteed $8 million next season, with an $8 million team option for 2027/28, giving Chicago a relatively inexpensive insurance policy if White departs.
Front Office Weighs Options
The Bulls hold several movable contracts and may consider absorbing unwanted deals to collect additional draft picks, according to local coverage. Significant roster changes could be delayed until the offseason, but the approaching deadline leaves management with decisions to make as injuries pile up in the backcourt.
