Sacramento, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings have shown interest in Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland while searching for a long-term solution at the position, according to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.

The Kings have lacked a primary floor general since dealing De’Aaron Fox last season and currently sit near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, struggling to establish consistent offense. Team executives believe Garland, 23, could immediately address that need.

League observers cited by Afseth say Garland might eventually seek an opportunity to lead a team on his own, something he has shared with Donovan Mitchell since the latter’s arrival in Cleveland. Garland has not publicly indicated any desire to leave, and he has repeatedly said he enjoys playing alongside Mitchell.

This season Garland is averaging 16.9 points and 6.9 assists while shooting 36.5 percent from three-point range. He is earning $39.4 million and is returning from offseason toe surgery, a factor some around the league believe has contributed to early-season inefficiency.

Cleveland, 19-16 after last year’s 64-18 campaign, has been uneven through the first two months. While the Cavaliers regard Evan Mobley and Mitchell as untouchable, rival teams continue to monitor the roster. Garland does not hold a no-trade clause, making it possible for Cleveland to entertain inquiries such as Sacramento’s if the club continues to look for answers.
