The Los Angeles Lakers ended 2025 on a sour note, falling 128-106 to the Detroit Pistons on December 30 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Detroit, which entered the night with the Eastern Conference’s best record, exploited the athletic mismatch that has troubled Los Angeles all season. The loss dropped the Lakers to 20-11.

First-half shootout favors Detroit

Celebrating his 41st birthday, LeBron James opened the game with two quick assists to Deandre Ayton and replacement starter Jake LaRavia—in the lineup for the injured Rui Hachimura. James then converted a reverse layup in transition to give L.A. an early advantage.

The momentum shifted when Marcus Smart, hit in the face on defense, was whistled for a personal foul and assessed a technical for arguing. Detroit capitalized as Luka Doncic buried a three-point play and a long-range jumper, while Cade Cunningham orchestrated the Pistons’ offense. Detroit closed the first quarter ahead 36-30.

Cunningham opened the second period with consecutive baskets, pushing the margin into double digits. James momentarily stopped a long Lakers scoring drought with a three, but the Pistons continued to dominate the paint. LaRavia absorbed an elbow from Jalen Duren, who was issued a Flagrant 1; the forward stayed in the game and hit both free throws. Despite defensive lapses, buckets from James and Doncic kept Los Angeles within 70-65 at halftime.

Pistons pull away after halftime

The Lakers, often sluggish after intermission, briefly surged and tied the contest when Doncic completed a three-point play early in the third quarter. Minutes later, he drew a foul yet received a technical for flailing his arms, giving Detroit momentum to finish the frame ahead 96-88.
