ESPN analyst Zach Lowe advised the Dallas Mavericks to stand pat instead of seeking an Anthony Davis trade before the NBA trade deadline. Speaking on “The Zach Lowe Show” after Dallas fell 126-116 to the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day, Lowe said the franchise’s 12-20 record suggests inconsistency rather than a crisis that requires drastic action.
Lowe noted that the Mavericks have gone 7-5 over their last 12 games and argued that any deal involving Davis—who is currently sidelined with a right groin injury—would likely bring back diminished value. “If I’m stuck in that middle ground, I’m not making a bad Anthony Davis trade just to do something,” he said, urging the club to let the season “organically” play out.
According to Lowe, Dallas is unlikely to lose enough games to fall below projected lottery contenders such as the Jazz, Kings, Wizards, Pacers and Nets. He suggested that retaining flexibility and accepting short-term struggles could position the Mavericks for better opportunities in the offseason.
Lowe outlined a scenario in which Dallas returns next year with Davis, Kyrie Irving and last summer’s No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, banking on improved health and roster stability instead of a mid-season overhaul.
The Mavericks begin a three-game road trip Saturday against Sacramento as they try to halt their current slide.
