Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said Monday that a repeat of last season’s headline-grabbing trade for Jimmy Butler is improbable as the organization looks for ways to steady a .500 start.
Speaking on “Warriors Pregame Live” before the club’s home game, Dunleavy noted that deals of Butler’s magnitude are rare. “We’ll look to do stuff that makes our team better,” he said, “but I wouldn’t bank on that type of move. To get a guy like Jimmy Butler, to have the improvement that we did, that’d be pretty unrealistic.”
Golden State landed Butler last February after Miami’s attempt to send him to Phoenix collapsed. The acquisition sparked a 23-8 close to the regular season and helped the Warriors advance beyond the first round of the playoffs.
With the team now 15-15, Dunleavy emphasized fundamentals over fireworks. The Warriors average 16.2 turnovers per game, among the NBA’s highest totals. “We’ve got to start taking care of the ball,” he said, adding that the defense has shined when Quinten Post and Draymond Green share the floor. Offensively, Dunleavy pointed to strong stretches when Jimmy Butler leads the unit while Stephen Curry rests.
Dunleavy reiterated that the front office will explore upgrades, but he cautioned fans not to expect another blockbuster. For now, the Warriors are focused on tightening execution rather than making a splash on the trade market.
