LOS ANGELES — Center Deandre Ayton says reserve big man Jaxson Hayes provides something no other front-court teammate has matched in his career: momentum-shifting energy.
Speaking after practice on Monday, Ayton told reporters he considers Hayes “the best big man I have played alongside when it comes to holding your own.” Ayton highlighted Hayes’ emphatic dunks, alley-oop finishes and relentless second efforts as elements that ignite the crowd and elevate the Los Angeles Lakers’ intensity.
“We have different styles,” Ayton said. “I’m looking for the mid-range pocket shot, and he’s flying in the sky. Even when he misses, teams know they have to watch their heads.”
The Lakers signed Ayton before the 2025-26 season to start at center, and he is averaging nearly a double-double while giving the team a sturdy interior presence. Hayes, who became a starter last season after the trade of Anthony Davis, has returned to a bench role but continues to supply energy whenever Ayton rests.
Ayton added that he regularly praises Hayes “every game” for backing him up whenever he cannot play.
Coach notes playmaking growth
Head coach JJ Redick recently credited Hayes for expanding his passing and playmaking skills, noting that the 7-footer has made strides beyond his trademark dunks and blocks.
With Ayton providing scoring from mid-range and Hayes attacking above the rim, the Lakers rely on the duo’s contrasting styles to anchor the frontcourt throughout the season.
