Kings reportedly monitoring Cavaliers guard Darius Garland for possible trade

The Sacramento Kings have emerged as a potential suitor for Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Darius Garland while searching for a long-term floor general, according to a report by Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.

Afseth wrote that Sacramento has “kept an eye” on Garland’s situation as it evaluates options following last season’s trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. League sources cited in the report believe Garland may eventually want an opportunity to steer a team’s offense as its primary leader.

Garland, 23, is averaging 16.9 points and 6.5 assists this season, both below his career highs, and is shooting career-low percentages after undergoing offseason toe surgery. He is earning $39.4 million in 2023-24, a figure that would influence any potential deal.

The Cavaliers are 15-14 after finishing first in the Eastern Conference standings a year ago. Sacramento sits at 7-22, tied for the NBA’s worst record, increasing the urgency to find stability at point guard.

“Darius is the safest option on the trade market,” one source told Afseth. While the comment does not confirm Garland’s availability, it underscores the league-wide attention on his status.
