Mavericks Expected to Delay GM Hire Until After Trade Deadline

The Dallas Mavericks are unlikely to appoint a permanent head of basketball operations before the NBA trade deadline on February 5, according to a report by The Athletic’s Christian Clark.

Former president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison was dismissed on November 11. The club elevated Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to serve as co-interim general managers, and league sources told Clark the pair is expected to guide the front office through at least the deadline—and possibly for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

While both interim executives will be evaluated for the full-time post, governor Patrick Dumont is said to prefer a candidate with prior experience as a top basketball decision-maker. The Mavericks plan to launch a wide-ranging search in the spring.

External names have already surfaced. Former Utah Jazz general manager and current Detroit Pistons senior vice president of basketball operations Dennis Lindsey is viewed as a potential target, multiple outlets—including Marc Stein, ESPN and The Athletic—previously reported. Minority owner Mark Cuban is reportedly supportive of pursuing Lindsey, a Texas native with extensive NBA front-office experience.

For now, Finley and Riccardi will steer roster decisions as Dallas approaches the crucial trade window.
