New York — Dwight Howard says the Knicks are making a misstep by refusing to hang an NBA Cup banner at Madison Square Garden.
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year lashed out at the organization’s stance, calling himself “second hand embarrassed” that the franchise will not publicly acknowledge its in-season tournament triumph. Howard argued that every sanctioned league trophy deserves a place in the rafters, no matter how new the competition may be.
New York captured the NBA Cup during the league’s mid-season tournament but has decided against adding a banner, choosing instead to reserve the Garden’s rafters for championships won in the traditional postseason. Howard believes that approach undervalues a significant achievement and sends the wrong message to both players and fans.
“If you win it, you celebrate it,” he said, urging the team to embrace the hardware rather than minimize it.
