The Los Angeles Lakers are not expected to reach a contract extension with forward Rui Hachimura before training camp opens next month, according to reporter Jovan Buha on his latest “Buha’s Block” podcast.
Buha said his current information indicates no agreement is imminent over the next six weeks, noting that the organization wants to “keep the books clean” while determining whether Hachimura will start or serve as the primary sixth man this season.
Hachimura, 27, became eligible for an extension when the NBA’s new calendar year began on July 6. He is entering the final season of his deal, worth slightly more than $18.2 million, and would hit unrestricted free agency in July 2025 if no new contract is signed.
The forward has been a steady contributor since arriving from the Washington Wizards in January 2023. Last season he averaged 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 51 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and 77 percent at the foul line.
A major consideration for the Lakers’ front office is long-term salary flexibility. Team executives are reportedly focused on preserving cap space for the summer of 2027, when the free-agent class is projected to be strong. As of now, Luka Dončić is the only notable player under contract beyond the 2026-27 season, with Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt holding a $13.3 million player option that same summer.
Hachimura’s performance and role in the upcoming campaign are expected to influence whether Los Angeles commits to him beyond this season.
