Las Vegas — NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league will collaborate with the Miami Heat to address the unresolved status of guard Terry Rozier, whose future remains clouded by federal gambling charges.
Speaking Saturday before the NBA Cup championship game, Silver described the matter as “unprecedented” and acknowledged the league has yet to determine a clear course of action. “There’s no obvious solution here,” he told reporters, adding that officials continue to review the case without a set timetable for a decision or potential relief.
Rozier, 30, has been on indefinite unpaid leave since his arrest on federal charges related to illegal gambling. His salary, valued at $26.6 million for the 2024-25 season, is currently being held in an escrow-type account while the NBA prepares for an arbitration hearing that will decide whether he should receive pay during his absence.
Multiple reports indicate Miami has not been told whether it can waive Rozier or include his salary in a trade while he remains sidelined. Because his contract is only partially guaranteed, the Heat could realize limited savings if a ruling is issued before early January.
Miami acquired Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets in January 2024, unaware of the alleged betting activity or the league’s investigation. The Heat still owe Charlotte a protected future first-round pick as part of that transaction.
