Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James says he is “so happy” with the way guard Austin Reaves has embraced a larger role and turned it into an All-Star–caliber season.
Speaking on the latest episode of the “Mind The Game” podcast with Steve Nash, James reflected on Reaves’ development after a start to the 2025-26 campaign that saw both James and Luka Doncic miss time. During that stretch, the fifth-year guard carried much of the Lakers’ scoring burden and has remained the team’s No. 2 option even after James returned.
“AR has picked up exactly where he left off,” James said. “He came into this season healthier, and the coaching staff knew it wasn’t far-fetched to give him more responsibility. He puts in the work, then goes to the golf course, clears his mind, and comes back to basketball. I’m just a great dude and I’m so happy for all his success.”
Career Highs Across the Board
Reaves is averaging personal bests in points, assists and rebounds while solidifying himself as one of the NBA’s top guards. James noted that last season Reaves battled a late-year toe injury, but a clean bill of health has helped unlock another level of confidence.
“He’s not just one of the guys—he’s one of the guys on our team,” James said, emphasizing the organization’s trust in the Arkansas native.
Work Ethic Fits Lakers’ Identity
The Lakers have repeatedly highlighted Reaves as a model of the franchise’s desired culture: relentless preparation and team-first mentality. His performance has been a key reason Los Angeles has exceeded preseason expectations.
Team Wins Even on Off Nights
Reaves recently endured his worst outing of the year in a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, yet the Lakers still prevailed. The guard later said he was encouraged that the roster could secure wins even when he struggles, underscoring the squad’s depth and resiliency.
The Lakers continue their homestand later this week, with Reaves entrenched as the secondary scoring option and James publicly backing his meteoric ascent.
