Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd insisted he was “never thinking about leaving Dallas” after the New York Knicks tried to interview him for their head-coaching opening during the offseason.
Speaking on Nov. 19 ahead of the teams’ first meeting of the 2025-26 campaign, Kidd confirmed previous reports that the Mavericks declined New York’s request for an interview. He added that the decision would not have changed his plans even if the organization had granted permission.
“We have a lot of work here to be done,” Kidd said. “I was drafted here. I have won here. I love the city, I love the fans. It never crossed my mind to leave Dallas.”
Speculation over mutual interest surfaced during the Knicks’ coaching search, partly because New York was the Hall of Fame point guard’s final stop as a player. The pursuit ended when the Knicks hired Mike Brown, while Kidd agreed to a multi-year extension with Dallas one month later.
Although flattered by the attention, Kidd emphasized his commitment to the Mavericks. “I think it’s safe to say we all enjoy being wanted,” he noted. “That was a nice touch.”
The 2025-26 season marks Kidd’s fifth on the Mavericks’ sideline. He enters the year with a 183-160 record and an appearance in the 2024 NBA Finals as the highlight of his tenure.
