The Los Angeles Lakers announced Friday that rookie forward Adou Thiero has been medically cleared and will be in uniform against the New Orleans Pelicans, marking his first potential appearance of the season.
Thiero, 21, had been sidelined while recovering from surgery on his left knee. The organization adopted a cautious approach to his rehabilitation, holding him out of training camp and all regular-season contests to date.
Head coach JJ Redick told reporters before tip-off that Thiero is more likely to see game action Saturday in Milwaukee, but left the door open for limited minutes Friday depending on how the matchup unfolds. The rookie has logged minimal practice time since surgery, making an extensive role unlikely in his debut.
Los Angeles views Thiero’s athleticism and defensive instincts as potential boosts, particularly against up-tempo opponents. Friday’s meeting with New Orleans is the Lakers’ second group-stage game in the Emirates NBA Cup.
With Thiero activated, the Lakers’ injury report now lists only LeBron James (right sciatica) and Gabe Vincent (left ankle sprain) as out. James has begun practicing with the South Bay Lakers during the team’s five-game road trip, while Vincent remains on schedule to return within his original two-to-four-week timeline.
James, poised to become the first player in NBA history to appear in a 23rd season, completed an intensified second workout with the G League affiliate without setbacks, according to the team.
The Lakers have yet to field a fully healthy roster this year, but Friday’s activation of Thiero moves them closer to that goal.
