LOS ANGELES — Kawhi Leonard missed his fifth consecutive game Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets and remains without a return date while recovering from a sprained right ankle and a significant sprain in the same foot, the LA Clippers said.
President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank told reporters before tipoff that the forward suffered both injuries during a Nov. 3 loss to the Miami Heat. Leonard posted 27 points in 37 minutes of that 120-119 defeat but has not appeared since.
“With Kawhi, it wasn’t just an ankle sprain,” Frank explained. “He also had a significant sprain in his foot. When he sprained his ankle, it kind of triggered a mechanism in his foot.”
The organization consulted three physicians, and all agreed on the diagnosis, according to Frank. Leonard is receiving two to three treatment sessions each day as the club works to reduce inflammation before expanding his on-court workload.
Frank added that the Clippers will “have a better feel for it next week,” but did not provide a specific timetable for Leonard’s return.
The five-time All-Star will accompany the team on its upcoming six-game road trip, which opens Friday in Dallas against the Mavericks.
