During his annual youth camp in Roseville on August 10, Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis said he is encouraged by the roster changes general manager Scott Perry has made and hinted that additional moves could follow before training camp.
“Scott’s done a great job so far,” Sabonis told reporters. “A lot has changed, and a lot is probably still going to change, so we’ll see once camp starts.”
The three-time All-Star highlighted the signing of Dennis Schroder as a key addition after the Kings traded De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio in the deal that brought Zach LaVine and Sidy Cissoko to Sacramento. “Right now we have a starting-caliber point guard,” he said. “Dennis is very talented.”
Sabonis added that he was pleased with the play of the team’s young prospects in Summer League and noted that he recently hosted second-year forward Isaac Jones and rookie center Maxime Reynaud for workouts in Napa Valley.
The 27-year-old praised new head coach Doug Christie, who shed the interim tag this summer. “He was in the gym with me for three straight off-seasons,” Sabonis said. “The fans love him and so do we, so it’s going to be exciting.”
Sabonis also addressed the free-agency departure of fellow Lithuanian big man Jonas Valanciunas, who signed with Denver. “It’s tough to see a friend leave, but I’m happy for him—he’s on the top team in the West and all he wants to do is win.”
The veteran center believes a full training camp will allow Christie to devise schemes that maximize the skills of Sabonis, LaVine and DeMar DeRozan. After wrapping up his camp, Sabonis said he will travel to Los Angeles to train with several teammates, including DeRozan.
