The Los Angeles Lakers will visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 28, marking LeBron James’ lone appearance in his hometown during the 2025-26 regular season, according to multiple league sources.

The date falls exactly 10 years after James helped deliver the 2016 NBA championship to Cleveland. It continues an annual tradition that regularly draws heightened attention to the Cavaliers’ schedule.

This matchup surfaces amid several other leaked marquee games. Los Angeles is slated to open the season against the Golden State Warriors for the third time in four years and is scheduled to host the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day.

Measuring-stick game for both teams

Cleveland has re-established itself as an Eastern Conference contender behind Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and Darius Garland. The Cavaliers swept last season’s two-game series against the Lakers, each win coming by a wide margin.

Los Angeles has since overhauled its roster, adding Luka Doncic, Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia to complement James. The new-look lineup is expected to address the size and perimeter issues that plagued the Lakers against Cleveland’s frontcourt of Allen and Mobley.

James enters Year 23

James, who turns 40 during the season, continues to draw praise for his longevity. Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey recently expressed admiration for the forward’s passion and durability as he prepares for his 23rd NBA campaign.

The NBA is expected to release its full 2025-26 schedule later in August.
