The New York Knicks intend to keep both guard Malcolm Brogdon and swingman Landry Shamet on their 15-man roster for opening night, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
Cap Constraints Force Trade Search
New York is hard-capped at the NBA’s second tax apron of $207.8 million and currently has room for only one veteran minimum contract. Retaining both players would require a trade to clear salary, league sources told the Post.
Brogdon and Shamet each agreed to non-guaranteed, one-year deals this month. Bondy reported that both veterans passed on other offers, indicating the organization assured them of a roster spot.
Malcolm Brogdon’s Recent History
Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, joined the Knicks last week. The 2016-17 Rookie of the Year and 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year appeared in 24 games (13 starts) for the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 23.5 minutes. He shot 43.3% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range.
His top outing came on Nov. 30 in Milwaukee, where he scored 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting in a 124-114 loss. The former Virginia standout is heading into what would be his 10th NBA season in 2025-26.
Landry Shamet Opts for New York Return
Shamet, 28, re-signed on a one-year contract last Thursday after weighing multiple options. The guard told SNY’s Ian Begley he wanted to rejoin a locker room he enjoyed and help a contender chase a championship.
In 50 games off the bench for New York last season, Shamet averaged 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds while shooting a career-best 46.1% from the floor and 39.7% from deep. He was waived in the 2024 preseason because of a shoulder injury, then re-signed in December and debuted the following night. Shamet closed the regular season with a season-high 29 points on April 13 in Brooklyn.
The Knicks also added veterans Garrison Mathews, Matt Ryan and Alex Len to non-guaranteed deals this week, but Brogdon and Shamet are viewed as favorites for the final two roster spots once the club creates the necessary cap room.
