San Juan, Puerto Rico – Eleonora Boi, the pregnant wife of former NBA forward Danilo Gallinari, was bitten by a shark on Thursday while swimming near the shore at a crowded beach in the Carolina Resort, local authorities confirmed.

Captain Rubén Moyeno of the Carolina Municipal Police told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día that Boi sustained an open wound on her thigh. The Italian sports journalist, who is expecting her third child, was transported to the Medical Center in Río Piedras, where surgeons operated on her leg.

On Friday, Boi posted a photo from her hospital bed on Instagram, calling it “the worst day of my life.” She wrote that she never imagined a shark attack could happen so close to shore and thanked medical personnel, friends, and her husband for their support. “Fortunately, my baby and I are fine,” she added.

Local police are investigating the incident. Details about the species of shark and specific circumstances of the attack have not been released.

Gallinari, 37 in August, was selected by the New York Knicks with the No. 6 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-10 forward played 14 seasons with eight teams, averaging 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 777 regular-season games. He is currently playing for the Vaqueros de Bayamón in Puerto Rico.
