The fallout from Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes’ altercation with the Washington Wizards’ mascot has escalated, as the performer inside the “G-Wiz” costume has hired legal counsel and is weighing civil action.
Attorney Waukeen McCoy confirmed to TMZ Sports that he now represents the individual Hayes pushed during pre-game introductions at Capital One Arena on Jan. 30. McCoy, who previously handled a domestic-violence lawsuit against Hayes, said his client sustained injuries and plans to pursue compensation unless the matter is resolved privately.
“We will give them the opportunity to resolve the matter before taking legal action,” McCoy told the outlet, adding that additional parties could be named if a lawsuit is filed.
The incident led the NBA to suspend Hayes for one game, which he served while Los Angeles defeated the Philadelphia 76ers. Afterward, Hayes apologized publicly, explaining he reacted in anger after the mascot accidentally stepped on his foot during warmups.
No criminal charges have been announced, and the hiring of an attorney does not automatically trigger a lawsuit. However, McCoy’s statement that “legal action is anticipated” signals the situation remains unsettled.
Head coach JJ Redick has said he hopes Hayes uses the suspension as a learning experience, noting the importance of maintaining focus as the Lakers fight for playoff positioning in the Western Conference.
Hayes, 25, is averaging 6.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in a reserve role this season.
