The Los Angeles Lakers eased Luka Doncic into training camp after his demanding summer with Slovenia at EuroBasket, but the organization put its star guard back on the floor Tuesday night for a preseason meeting with the Phoenix Suns.
Vanderbilt encouraged by Doncic’s form
Forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who enjoyed his first injury-free offseason since arriving in Los Angeles, said the 26-year-old looked ready to go in recent workouts.
“He’s moving well and communicating on both ends,” Vanderbilt told reporters, according to Khobi Price of the Southern California News Group. “Having him practice and play this week helps us build momentum for the regular season.”
With LeBron James sidelined by right-side sciatica, Lakers coaches have asked Doncic to assume a greater leadership role. The former Dallas Mavericks standout is expected to be the team’s primary option and vocal presence while James recovers.
Managing minutes after EuroBasket
Head coach Darvin Ham and the medical staff limited Doncic’s workload early in camp to avoid additional wear following his “Herculean” duties for Slovenia over the summer. Tuesday marked his first in-game action in purple and gold since last season ended.
“We’re mindful of the miles he logged,” Ham said earlier in the week. “The goal is to have him fresh when the games count.”
New faces around the superstar
Los Angeles bolstered its rotation by acquiring center Deandre Ayton, wing Jake LaRavia and guard Marcus Smart during the offseason. Vanderbilt believes those additions will ease the transition as Doncic adapts to expanded responsibilities in a Lakers uniform.
“It’s next man up until LeBron is back,” Doncic said after practice Monday. “We have enough talent to stay on track.”
The Lakers continue preseason play Friday before opening the regular season later this month.
