Rui Hachimura Open to Any Role as Lakers Weigh Starting Lineup Options

The Los Angeles Lakers entered Media Day on September 29, 2025 fielding questions about how their revamped roster will line up on opening night. Forward Rui Hachimura, who has started the past two seasons, said he is ready to follow head coach JJ Redick’s plan—whether that means remaining in the first five or moving to the bench.

“It’s JJ’s decision, and I’ll do whatever he asks,” Hachimura told reporters. He added that last season’s starters built “good chemistry,” a unit that featured Hachimura alongside Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves.

Defensive concerns have fueled speculation that Redick might plug in a stopper such as Marcus Smart, Jarred Vanderbilt or Jake LaRavia. Hachimura acknowledged the chatter but pointed to improvements he made after Redick challenged him on that end of the floor. The 27-year-old also ranked as an efficient spot-up shooter while honing his cutting and rebounding.

A potential lineup shift could include newcomer Deandre Ayton at center, a move that would reshape the frontcourt. Redick said no decisions have been finalized, emphasizing that training camp will determine the best combinations.

Redick Sees Rising Confidence

Speaking separately, Redick praised Hachimura’s demeanor and progress. “Rui is a joy to be around every day,” the coach said. “Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a higher level of confidence. He’s still young in this league, and as your confidence grows, your production grows.”
