LOS ANGELES — Forward Rui Hachimura believes the Los Angeles Lakers can measure up to any contender—provided they maintain the cohesion that surfaced in Friday night’s win over the Sacramento Kings.
After posting a key fourth-quarter jumper during the 120-109 victory on March 1, 2026 at Crypto.com Arena, Hachimura told reporters the roster’s ceiling is evident whenever every piece fits. “When we play good, like really good, we look like a championship team,” he said. “But there are a lot of times we’re not, and we look like we’re just literally out of the playoffs team.”
The 28-year-old has become one of the club’s most reliable perimeter threats, sitting on pace to shoot better than 40 percent from three-point range for a third straight season. Since moving to a reserve role, he has anchored a bench unit that has struggled for scoring punch at times.
Injuries and frequent lineup changes, Hachimura noted, have made consistency difficult. “It’s a long season,” he added. “We’ve had a lot of injured guys in and out so we have a different rotation, different starting lineup. We have to play together, play hard, and that’s gonna be really good for us, staying consistent.”
Los Angeles has looked sharp in back-to-back outings, though both wins came against teams with losing records. Whether that form translates against top Western Conference opponents remains an open question as the Lakers chase postseason positioning.
Elsewhere on the bench, cameras caught a brief but heated exchange between Luka Doncic and head coach JJ Redick during Thursday’s rout of the Golden State Warriors, adding another storyline to the team’s push for stability.
The Lakers continue their homestand Monday night against a playoff-bound foe, where they will again test Hachimura’s assertion that collective focus can elevate them to title-contender level.
