Robert Horry Urges Lakers to Explore Sign-and-Trade for Austin Reaves

Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Robert Horry believes the franchise should move quickly to trade guard Austin Reaves rather than risk losing him in free agency next summer.

During the latest episode of his “Big Shot Bob” podcast, Horry said the Lakers would be “smart” to pursue a sign-and-trade involving Reaves. The seven-time NBA champion argued that Reaves and newly acquired star Luka Dončić overlap on the court, noting that both players handle the ball extensively and are not known for their defense.

“You don’t need two of the same players,” Horry said, emphasizing that Los Angeles could secure value now instead of watching Reaves depart without compensation in July 2026.

Reaves Entering Contract Year

The 27-year-old guard is set to begin his fifth NBA season on a contract that pays roughly $14 million in 2025-26. He can opt out and become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026, positioning him for a significant payday.

Reaves went undrafted in 2021 but has developed into an All-Star-caliber contributor. Despite declining an extension this offseason, league sources have indicated there is still mutual interest in a long-term deal to keep him in Los Angeles.

Lakers’ Offseason Moves

General manager Rob Pelinka reshaped the roster by adding Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia. Much of the roster now sits on expiring contracts, leaving the organization with flexibility—yet uncertainty—around how to build around Dončić over the long haul.

Fit With Dončić Remains Under Review

Los Angeles plans to open the 2025-26 season with Dončić and Reaves in the starting backcourt. The duo posted solid numbers in limited minutes last year, and Dončić previously blended effectively with other ball-dominant guards such as Kyrie Irving and Jalen Brunson in Dallas.

Still, Horry contends that a pre-deadline trade could be prudent if the pairing falters. Teams interested in Reaves may hesitate, however, knowing he could test free agency at season’s end.

The Lakers will have until the February trade deadline to decide whether to keep Reaves alongside Dončić or seek assets before his contract clock runs out.
