Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said the organization “would love” for LeBron James to end his playing days in purple and gold, reiterating the club’s stance during the team’s preseason press conference.
James, 41, opted into the final year of his contract earlier this summer and is poised to enter his 23rd NBA season. The forward will become an unrestricted free agent in July 2026, leaving his long-term future open to speculation after agent Rich Paul hinted James might seek a trade if offseason moves were unsatisfactory. No trade materialized, and James remains on the roster as training camp begins.
“He has earned the right to decide how long he plays,” Pelinka told reporters, emphasizing that the Lakers will honor whatever timeline James and his family choose. Pelinka added that the front office made “intentional” roster additions to help James and Luka Doncic compete for a championship this year.
Pelinka underlined that championship contention remains the franchise’s primary objective. “We built a really competitive, strong team,” he said, noting alignment on that goal from head coach J.J. Redick to the players.
While contract talks were tabled this summer, Pelinka said the Lakers continue to value James’ impact and hope his final NBA minutes are played at Crypto.com Arena. “We would love if LeBron’s story ends as a Laker,” he said.
Despite his age, James remains a top performer. After earning All-NBA Second Team honors last season, he landed at No. 8 on ESPN’s annual NBA Rank heading into 2025-26.
