Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick used Friday’s preseason finale as a dry run for the regular season, unveiling a starting five that featured guard Gabe Vincent in place of the injured LeBron James. Vincent joined Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton in the opening unit against the Sacramento Kings at Crypto.com Arena.
Why Vincent Got the Call
After the 109-99 loss, Redick said the decision was driven by Vincent’s combination of shooting, secondary playmaking and perimeter defense. The coach emphasized that the arrangement could be short-lived, noting that injuries and matchups will dictate future lineups. He added that surrounding Doncic and Ayton with additional floor spacing was a priority.
Matchup Considerations for Opening Night
The Lakers open the season Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors, and Redick acknowledged that Vincent’s ability to trail Stephen Curry through screens played a role in the choice. Although the starting group struggled on the defensive end versus Sacramento, Vincent’s presence boosted the offense; the guard scored 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
Vincent Learned of Promotion on Game Day
Vincent said he was informed of his new role Friday morning and worked with the starters during the team’s shootaround. He believes he can help by defending at a high level, facilitating when opportunities arise and maintaining proper spacing while Doncic and Reaves create offense.
James Out Until Mid-November
With LeBron James expected to miss at least the first few weeks of the season, Redick indicated he may experiment with multiple lineups before settling on a long-term solution. For now, Vincent becomes the first to audition for the spot after what Redick called a standout preseason highlighted by on-ball creation and relentless off-ball movement.
