JJ Redick says LeBron James in “great spot mentally” after offseason meetings

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said LeBron James is entering training camp in a positive frame of mind after a pair of summer meetings, easing concerns about the star forward’s future with the franchise.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Redick detailed two in-person conversations he had with the 23-year veteran. “I talked to LeBron fairly frequently,” Redick explained. “We had dinner in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons right around free agency, and we spent time again in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago. I came away thinking he’s in a great spot mentally and know he’s going to give us his absolute best.”

James, 40, exercised his player option earlier in the offseason while weighing whether to seek a trade, according to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. General manager Rob Pelinka then reshaped the roster with an eye toward building around Luka Doncic, leaving James on the final year of his contract for the first time in his career.

The Lakers now feature a projected core of Doncic, James and Austin Reaves. Redick, entering his second season on the sideline, said James’ veteran presence remains critical as the club transitions toward its new focal point. “He’s the gold standard for professionalism,” Redick noted.

Pelinka has described the situation as “delicate,” balancing the emergence of Doncic with a desire for James to finish his career in purple and gold. The front office did not add an additional season to James’ deal, but Pelinka has publicly reiterated that the organization “would love” for the four-time champion to retire as a Laker.

Media Day is scheduled for next week, with training camp opening immediately afterward. James is expected to address questions about his contract status and evolving role when the team assembles.
