LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said LeBron James took a leading role in the club’s first film review of the 2025-26 season, one day after a season-opening defeat to the Golden State Warriors.
The Lakers fell 116-95 at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 12, while James sat out Opening Night for the first time in his 22-year career. Television cameras showed the forward largely silent on the bench, prompting questions about his engagement. Redick dismissed that notion Wednesday, emphasizing that James was “very helpful” once the team gathered to break down video.
Focus on Transition Defense
According to Redick, the session highlighted missed assignments against Golden State’s fast break, particularly in locating three-point threats such as Stephen Curry and Buddy Hield. “Our intent to get back and protect the basket was pretty good,” the coach said. “We did a poor job of finding the lasers in transition.” Hield converted two second-half threes, while Curry hit one in front of the Lakers bench during the opening half.
Redick added that the staff drilled shift positioning and close-out technique after noticing repeated lapses on film. “If it’s not showing up in a game, it’s not clear,” he told reporters. “We’ve got to keep reinforcing those details.”
Player-Coach Dialogue Encouraged
The coach welcomed James’s questions and observations during the 10-minute teaching segment. “Having that back-and-forth is so healthy,” Redick said. “If you have a question, speak up; if you want to make a point, speak up.” He added that similar interaction from other veterans would benefit the roster throughout the season.
James Remains Sidelined Until Mid-November
Team officials project James’s return to game action in mid-November. Until then, Redick expects the 20-time All-Star to serve as an additional voice on the bench and in practice, citing his widely praised basketball IQ.
Reaves Takes Responsibility for Third-Quarter Struggles
Austin Reaves noted that Golden State’s 19-4 surge to open the third quarter decided Tuesday’s contest, labeling the lapse a recurring issue and placing accountability on the players rather than the coaching staff.
The Lakers continue a three-game homestand Friday against the Sacramento Kings.
